The New Wave of Independent Labels

from enoughrecords - 22 May 2009:
"We are happy to annouce the work of Hwanho Choi, a student at the University of Liverpool who focused his undergraduate degree dissertation on The New Wave of Independent Labels (link - pdf). He interviewed us for his work, and the final result is well worth the read for all those interested in contemporary social / music culture."

Tokyo Dawn Records relaunches!

The legendary Tokyo Dawn Records relaunches its netlabel annex website/blog. The Frankfurt am Main based netlabel is one of the oldest netlabels (°1997) and is well-known for its loungy, triphoppy, jazzy style.

From the TDR blog: "After months of silence, we are proud to announce the relaunch of Tokyo Dawn Records. So many things changed in the last years, the music scene and the financial system collapsed, the internet exploded. We think it’s the perfect time for our musical comeback."

You can find their history on Wikipedia.

Jamendo launches “Thanks for downloading” campaign!

From Jamendo:
"After the UK and New Zealand, France is considering a so-called “three strikes” law to fight illegal file-sharing on the internet. Here at jamendo, we of course support free and legal music downloads, which is why we are launching a “Thanks for downloading” campaign!"

Kazoomzoom

And thanks to Marco Kalnenek from previous blog, we discovered that there's a netlabel dedicated to kids: "Kazoomzoom".
From their website: "Kazoomzoom.com is the world's first netlabel devoted to children. Our little community is making history together! The netlabel features music for kids (by kids and by cool grownups), as well as audio stories, videos, printable books and paper toys. All of it is free to stream and download.
The Kazoomzoom website and content is all created and shared by volunteers. Nothing is being sold to children.
We encourage people of all ages to add their music, stories, art and other content for kids at Kazoomzoom.com. Illustrators, musicians, story readers and writers, toy makers and other artists choose whatever copyright system they prefer for their submissions, from full rights to public domain."

I certainly liked their "Silly Songs", "La Valise aux Mille Voyages", and " Our Corto Discorso ".

This is definitely recommended stuff for teachers and other people working with children.

netlabel grafix

Everybody in the nelabel world knows and appreciates Eldino's blog, because of his essential readings about netlabels. Just remember and reread these classics:
- How to start a netlabel?
- What is a netlabel?
- Some statistics
- How-to tag songs?
This week Eldino has published new statistics of netlabel tunes and their genres: it is based on 43.057 downloaded files, and his own tagging. First conclusions are that there is a lot of noise to download, there is lots of electronic dance music, and there is almost no rock music in the netlabel scene. Feel free to participate in the lively discussion about his conclusions on Phlow.

Eldino has posted a graphic of the music genres which netlabels cover. This image is generated with a plug-in in Songbird. It is based on 270 netlabels, with circa 38000 tunes (this list is the personal choice of Eldino). 18% of the music has the tag 'noise' which Eldino uses for 'field recordings, harsh noise, power noise, white noise, scream, lo-fi music and analog'.
If your knowledge of Italian is better than that of your Spanish, you can read on more here.

How to start a netlabel?

The famous Italian blogger Eldino had some time ago a very interesting blog called "Come aprire una netlabel" (How to start a netlabel), but unfortunately it was in Italian. Now, another blogger, Barefoot Melt (Envisioning Toad), has made an attempt to translate the manual in English (with a little help from Google Translate) and made some thoughts about it. Feel free to submit comments on this manual.

1bit wonder has left the building ...

From the website of 1bit wonder: "_1bit #032 by Latex Distortion and Gary West will be our last release. Too many other projects have been consuming our time lately, so instead of doing things half-heartedly we decided to quit when it's best. Thanks for three wonderful years full of love and great music! Our site will remain active for a while and may still serve you as an archive."

Thank you 1bit wonder for the beautiful releases! Netwaves will cast an interview with the founders, probably in nws062.

some netlabel stats

Simon C. published some stats on IA:

"Just thought it might be nice to mention this, because I've noticed the rate of netlabel adoption is quite rapidly increasing. Some brief stats:

- 850 netlabels, in total
- increasing by around 25 netlabels per month.

- 11,990 separate 'items', that is singles, EPs, or albums
- increasing by 5/10 items per day (!)

Not bad at all! Obviously, the upload system for the Archive is not the MOST userfriendly in the world, but the structure of netlabels (collections, items, download counts) works really well for microlabels. So kudos to everyone at the Archive for getting everything running smoothly."
