trip to the balls of Brussels

Last monday, my office offered me and my colleagues a trip to the Atomium in Brussels. It was a nice trip: this building has an eternal coolness, while it's wrapped in fifties nostalgia. All by all: you should see this piece of art.
But that's where it gets interesting for us: this building has a copyright, ie. when i publish a picture of this copy of an Iron crystal on my website i should pay the Belgian collecting society Sabam (no panic, the picture on my blog is not a picture or copy, it's just a link pointing to the server of the Atomium). So, if i want to publish a picture that i took of this building, constructed and built by tax money, i have to pay royalties to the family of the architect (+ 70 years after his death in 2005) ... Now, that is when i start to think this should be called corruption :-(
Well, the guys at indymedia.be have found a solution to this problem :-D (article in Dutch, picture in universal).

Sabam

- de bewijslast ligt bij Sabam, dwz. ik draai een hele avond Creative Commons-muziek, Sabam zegt dat er een aantal nummers van Sabam-auteurs zijn: welnu, zij moet dat bewijzen;
- Sabam is haar agentschappen aan het omvormen: geen zelfstandige bvba'ers meer, maar wel zelfopgeleide en bedigde inspecteurs;
- als ik een benefiet geef met artiesten aangesloten bij Sabam die gratis optreden, gaat sowieso een deel van de opbrengst niet naar bvb. Music for Life, wel naar het 3de zwembad van Madonna;
- ...

Volgende dinsdag komt er weer het volgende Sabam debat aan!

Op de foto: de Vibi gecreerd door Godfried-Willem Raes van Stichting Logos, die de muzikale intermezzo's verzorgde.

    because of server problems @ archive.org there can be a delay: try again after 1 hour ...

    Flick Radio

    Almost forgot to blog about this rising hit called "Flick Radio". It's a movie, well, not really a movie, but rather a compilation of photo's taken from Flickr.com accompanied by the voices of 5 photographers who make the story. It's a nice mix of images and the reflections about what you see or don't see and about the virtual contacts.

    Written and directed by Bert Kommerij, music by Marco Raaphorst and others, video adaptation by Pepijn Kortbeek.

    All pictures used come from Flickr.com and were published, like this movie itself, under Creative Commons liscensing. It's spoken English/Dutch and subtitled Dutch/English.
    There's also a YouTube version

Tomorrow, wednesday, he starts his Belgium/Austria/Swiss/Czech Tour. He also comes to Leuven because he is a big fan of Creative Commons and because the other CC fan 'netwaves.org' is residing over here, so we're gonna have a chat. the history of sampling

    At the "The History of Sampling" you can find a very handsome overview of, well euh ... the history of sampling, from 1952 on, in an interactive Java plug-in.
    Jesse says: "The sampling data is from the-breaks.com, although album information for the sampling songs was collected through other means."
